Catechetical Ministry

faith formation for child and youth

What is Catechetical Ministry?

to teach children about our faith

“Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” (Mt 28:19-20)

Faith formation starts early in life when mom and dad by their example form the child in the way of life as a Christian. It continues in a more formal way as one approaches school age. Faith formation is particularly important as one receives the various sacraments and children grow to maturity in the faith.

Teacher of the church

The Catechetical Ministry’s mission is to plan and implement programmes for the Catechesis of children, youth and their parents; and to assist in the preparation of those who are to receive the Sacraments.

The parish catechist is also responsible for the various religious formation and sacramental preparation programmes of the parish. The catechist will reach out to the youth and to organised formations and activities which will enable them to have a better relationship with Jesus and with the Christian community.

The Ministry is also responsible for preparing the children for their First Holy Communion, Reconciliation and Confirmation. The children will have to attend the weekly catechetical preparation classes in order to be able to participate fully in receiving the Sacraments. The Sacrament of the First Holy Communion and Confirmation will take place in the month of October and November each year.

Pass on our faith

The Ministry is designed and formulated to teach and pass on the teaching of the Catholic faith according to the vision and mission of the Church to the children in the Parish. It fosters a spirit of community and active participation in the life and mission of the Church and affirms the Catholic identity, while fostering the longing for unity. Catechism classes are conducted every Saturday or Sunday before and after Mass for the language groups.

During the classes, the children have their Catechism Calendar filled with lessons (guided by the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the Malaysian Catechetical Series), workshops, camps and fun-filled activities. Children are also encouraged to participate in the Liturgy, Choir and the BEC.

Be a Catechist

The Catechetical Ministry of this parish includes the Chapel of St. Joseph and consists of children ranging from ages 5 to 17  from all four language groups – English, Mandarin, Tamil and Bahasa – to accommodate the different language-speaking communities in the parish.

Although we have a minimum of two teachers per class to accommodate the individual needs of the children, the doors of the ministry are always open to parishioners who feel the urge or calling to serve the Lord in this ministry.
